ART101 studio is a relaxed and informal creative environment for absolute beginners to explore oil painting with brush or palette knife. We will demystify the oil painting process with a simple yet methodical, step-by-step approach. You will gain a good understanding of how oils behave on canvas to get the best possible results.

With no set topics, you choose your subject matter. Small art class sizes (max 8 students per session) means everyone is treated as an individual and afforded a generous amount of one on one time with your tutor. Our unique approach to teaching is tailored to what you want to achieve – one size does not fit all.

You can attend classes on a weekly or fortnightly basis and there is some flexibility to swap between time slots. Should you choose fortnightly it is recommended (but not required) that you attend a double session to ensure adequate progress.

As our weekly studio sessions are BYO materials you will need to get your own starter kit of paints, tools, mediums and a canvas or two. Click here to see our full materials list

“A great relaxed atmosphere where you can learn so much about yourself and your abilities with pencil, charcoal, paint brush, whatever, and with the best guide ever, Mel is amazing. Thank you so much Mel”
Neyta (Student from 2012 – 2020)

Mel has so much experience and love for art that she inspires me to grow whatever tiny amount of creativity I possess. She naturally connects with each student’s individual style and preference and challenges them with helpful technique and understanding on the why and how also. She is the very best art teacher and such a lovely person too!” – Lorraine (2017 – current student)

“I have been painting with Mel since 2013 and have been fortunate enough to try all different mediums. When using oils, Mel has pushed me to try new things. I love coming to classes and seeing what I can create with her help. Most recently (2021) I have been playing with palette knives. – Laura
